Questions around South Coast collaring
The Bega District News is reporting on plans by the South East Local Land Service (LLS) to trap and collar sambar and fallow deer in order to track their movements.
Notably, the deer will be marked and the LLS is warning that they will not be fit for human consumption owing to the sedatives used in trapping.
We would have thought that the drugs used would wear off after a safe withholding period. We will reach out to the South East Local Land Service for more information on this project.
Kiwi’s have court win, but dark clouds still hang over Tahr
In New Zealand, stuff.co.nz reported on a successful court challenge by the New Zealand Tahr Foundation. New Zealand’s High Court has told the Deprartment of Conservation ‘’to reconsider its decision to proceed with the 2020-2021 plan after consulting with interests represented by the Foundation and other stakeholders’’.
“DOC is to produce a reasoned decision reflecting its reconsideration for either amending aspects of the 2020-2021 plan, or providing reasons for not doing so.“Until consultation and a further decision have been completed, DOC is not to undertake more than one half of the 250 hours provided for in the 2020-21 plan”.
Our friends at the New Zealand Deerstalkers Foundation advise however that despite the direction of the court, Minister for Conservation, Eugenie Sage is acting in “bad faith” by directing that only Bull Tahr be targeted in an upcoming cull.
Hunting on hold for Melburnians
In Victoria, COVID 19 restrictions have significantly limited (if not stopped) hunting opportunities for tens of thousands of Melburnian deer hunters.
There are limited public and private land hunting opportunities within the restricted travel zone - but access to to Victoria’s vast deer hunting opportunites in the East of the State are off limits for six weeks.
