Sustainable use of wildlife the winner as Victoria puts local kangaroo on the plate
Thursday 24 December 2020
The Weekly Times (paywall) is reporting that, from January 2021, local licenced harvesters will be allowed to sell kangaroos for human consumption within Victoria and interstate (currently the local pet food trade is the only option). These changes bring Victoria into line with other states.
More than 40,000 kangaroos were harvested for pet food in Victoria in 2020.
Prior to the introduction of the commercial industry, overabundant kangaroos were shot to waste in Victoria at the landholder’s expense.
The Weekly Times is also reporting that the Victorian government is poised to increase the quota for kangaroos in Victoria to 90,000.
The Victorian Kangaroo harvest is regulated by the Game Management Authority.
