Recently the Game Management Authority (GMA) has been conducting hound assessments as a part of their role as the regulator of game hunting in Victoria.
In Victoria, sambar have been hunted with hounds for over 100 years.
Hunting with hounds is highly regulated, with restrictions on breeds, the number of both hunters and hounds used in a hunt as well as when and where hound hunting can occur are all determined within the Wildlife (Game) Regulations 2012.
One of the main responsibilities of the GMA is the enforcement of the game-hunting laws and taking action against those who break them.
Hounds are expected to meet their respective breed standards as specified by the Australian National Kennel Council. Any hound which does not conform to these standards, will not be eligible for registration.
