The composition of the Legislative Council (Upper House) is always difficult to predict, it is rarely controlled by the government and features a diversity of minor party representation. Early indicators point to the Government holding 15 seats, requiring six additional votes to secure the passage of legislation in the 40-seat chamber.
As the results are finalised from the election, the Government and opposition will confirm their Ministers and Shadow Ministers, respectively, confirming the landscape in which we conduct our critical advocacy work.
Hunters will understand that the updating of both the Animal Welfare Act and the Wildlife (Game) Regulations is in 2023. These will feature early in the new year due to the timelines required to be met before expiration. The Australian Deer Association has invested significant work into these processes and will continue to do so.
The Andrews Labor government has had a proven track record of supporting and investing in hunting as a wild, sustainable food source; this was highlighted by Agriculture Minister Tierney to the Australian Deer Association and its fellow organisations before the election as a part of the joint log of claims. The Australian Deer Association looks forward to building upon this great work already done and delivering more results regarding the sound management of wild deer and public land access.
