A Watershed Moment for Recreational Deer Hunting in Victoria

The Allan Labor Government will today introduce landmark legislation to the Victorian Parliament that will see the National Parks Act amended to allow seasonal deer hunting in the Errinundra and Snowy River National Parks from early 2026.

This historic change is the result of years of persistent advocacy by the Australian Deer Association (ADA). It represents one of the most significant expansions of public land access for recreational hunters in Victoria’s history.

Building on a Legacy of Advocacy

The ADA has consistently advocated for fair and responsible access to public land for recreational deer hunting across Australia. Our advocacy has already delivered essential wins in New South Wales, Tasmania, and Victoria, including the opening of the Alpine National Park — now recognised nationally as a premier hunting destination.

The Errinundra and Snowy River National Parks will now join that proud list, cementing Victoria as a leader in managed, regulated public land access for deer hunting.

Recreational deer hunting is not only a treasured cultural tradition, but it is also a significant economic driver. Independent research indicates that deer hunting generates more than $200 million annually for the Victorian economy, while supporting over 3,100 jobs.

Crucially, many of these jobs are based in regional areas, where hunters bring vital tourism spending to small towns and rural businesses. Expanding access to new national parks will help strengthen those regional economies and open new opportunities for tourism, guiding, and related industries.

Public land access to Victoria’s national parks is made possible by the game status of wild deer. This ensures that deer hunting remains subject to appropriate regulation and oversight, while preserving opportunities for effective control and management where needed.

This mature, balanced approach ensures that recreational deer hunting coexists with conservation values, while delivering both cultural and economic benefits for the community.

The ADA acknowledges the leadership of Premier Jacinta Allan and Minister for Environment and Outdoor Recreation, Steve Dimopoulos, for their ongoing engagement with the hunting community and their recognition of the importance of fair access to public land.

Their decision to amend the National Parks Act demonstrates a forward-looking commitment to outdoor recreation and rural communities.

Above all, this achievement belongs to you — the members, supporters, and friends of the Australian Deer Association. Your continued support has enabled us to advocate, campaign, and achieve milestones like this.

This is not just a victory for hunters, but a victory for a fair and mature approach to public land management in Victoria.

Together, we are proving that recreational hunters can lead the way in responsible land use and community benefit.

The Australian Deer Association thanks you for your support.
