Recent changes (or lack of) to the Agricultural Legislation Amendment Bill 2022
On Thursday, May 26th the Victorian Government passed a new agricultural amendment bill.
This is likely the last piece of legislation in the current term of the Victorian Parliament that would affect hunters and hunting.
The amendment bill provided no material change to the legislative framework that hunters currently operate under.
It does include definitions for “game meat”, “field depot” and “harvest vehicle”. These amendments will ensure that wild game harvesters can continue to operate legally and separately from the domestic livestock abattoir system.
The Australian Deer Association has spent the best part of ten years advocating for changes that enable hunters to have their game meat, which is not intended for sale be processed at commercial, unlicensed facilities.
The amendment bill makes no changes to this.
It is an aspiration, that with enhanced education and advocacy, that wild game food can be shared more broadly.
These changes, whilst minor, continue the important progress that the Victorian Government has made on this issue over the past eight years.
