Previously we have spoken about the delays to the Wildlife (Game) Regulations (Game Regulations) 2012 and how the ADA advocated for their review to be brought forward to 2021 to avoid delays.
However, last year when they were due to sunset (expire), a 12-month extension to them was granted, having them expire in 2023.
Since then, a select committee was announced to inquire into Victoria's Recreational Native Bird Hunting arrangement with a report due to the government by 31 August 2023.
Adding to this complicated process is an ongoing review of the Wildlife Act 1975.
Therefore, the government is expected to create a set of Interim Game Regulations for recreational hunting that will ultimately be replaced based on the government's response to both the native bird inquiry and the Wildlife Act review in 2024.
What does this mean?
No changes for 12 more months
The government's response to the native bird inquiry and Wildlife Act 1975 will shape the next set of regulations.
A regulatory impact statement will be released next year after new regulations have been drafted for consultation.
The ADA will continue to advocate and deliver the best outcomes for recreational deer hunting and sound wild deer management.
