Prior to applying for a Victorian Game Licence to hunt Sambar Deer with the use of hounds, you need to pass the Hound Hunting Test (HHT). The lack of availability of this testing, particularly for interstate hunters, poses a barrier to entry for those wising to try hound hunting.
ADA is actively advocating for hound and WIT testing to be made more readily available and delivered by volunteers and retailers - just as firearm licence, boating licence and NSW R-Licence testing is. There is no good reason why it cannot be.
In the meantime, the ADA has arranged for the Victorian Game Management Authority to conduct hound hunting tests in Tasmania, at our Northern Branch Meeting Rooms in Longford on Monday 10 May 2021.
Come along and hear from the Victorian Game Management Authority on responsible, ethical and safe hunting of Sambar Deer with the use of hounds. The education night will include the Hound Hunting test, which hunters must pass in order to apply for a Victorian Game License endorsed for Hound Hunting. For further information visit
The requirement to pass the HHT ensures that all hound hunters are aware of their legal, ethical and safety requirements when hunting.
Test attendance
There is no refund for applicants who do not attend the test they are booked into. The applicant will need to book into another test and pay a new fee to sit the test on another date.
If you are unable to attend the test date you have booked into, you will need to notify the GMA (Contact the GMA) prior to the test date in order to move your test date or obtain a refund.
What does the test involve?
The test includes questions on licensing requirements, when you can hunt, legal hunting methods, safe firearm handling practices, ethical responsibilities and other information relevant to the hunting of Sambar Deer with the aid of hounds.
There are a total of 30 multiple choice questions in the test. To pass, you must answer 23 (75%) of the questions correctly. This includes five key questions that must all be answered correctly to gain a pass. The test will take approximately 30-40 minutes to complete.
What do I need to bring?
Photo identification (like a driver’s or shooter’s licence) must be presented at the test session. If the applicant doesn’t bring photo identification they can not sit the test.
You need to be at least 10 years old to sit the HHT. Applicant’s under 18 who do not have photo ID need to bring along a copy of a birth certificate or birth extract.
When do I get my results?
Test results are sent out in the mail to applicants within 10 working days from the test date. Applicants who pass the test receive a Certificate of Proficiency.
A score of 75% or greater constitutes a pass, provided that the applicant also correctly answers all five of the key questions.
