The weekend of the 14th and 15th of January saw the annual Hog Deer Education weekend run by the Australian Deer Association.
The course is offered in conjunction with the Blond Bay Hog Deer Advisory Group to all hunters drawn in the upcoming balloted hunts.
Once again, it was hosted on Sunday Island, a premiere location to learn about hog deer.
Perfect weather greeted the attendees, with many having travelled from interstate to make it; they were in for a big weekend of learning in preparation for their upcoming hunts. They were able to learn first-hand from experienced hog deer hunters on Snake Island, Blond Bay and the Boole Poole Peninsular.
The Game Management Authority presented the regulations that apply to hog deer hunting. Boat safety and local boating knowledge were well covered by Vanessa Spark, a boating education officer from Safe Transport Victoria, and Bill and Damien Knibbs, two local coast guards.
Gavin Counsell and Barry Gell presented detailed demonstrations on caping and the checking process for harvested hog deer; Barry also did a presentation on game management on Sunday Island.
Fantastic events like this are not possible without the help of those who share the same passion for deer and education. The Association would like to thank the Blond Bay Hog Deer Advisory Group, Sunday Island/ParaPark Co-operative, the GMA, Vanessa Spark, Bill & Damien Knibbs, and the volunteers who ensured this was a fantastic weekend enjoyed by all.
We wish all the hunters the best of luck in the upcoming season.
