Hog deer ballot, once again delivers for hunters and the habitat
Another successful year of public land hunting hog deer hunting has drawn to a close.
The 2022 Blond Bay ballot resulted in a total harvest of 23 hog deer.
Comprising of 20 stags, and 3 hinds.
This was half compared to the 2021 harvest, which comprised, 35 stags and 11 hinds.
Periods two and three proved to be tough going in Blond Bay and Boole Poole with no deer harvested.
Across both islands a total of three deer (two stags, one hind) were taken during the ballot.
However, on Snake island, each hunting period was fruitful with a total of 20 deer (18 stags, two hinds) being harvested.
The cooperation, assistance and coordination from the Game Management Authority, Parks Victoria and the Snake Island Cattlemen’s Association are critical to the smooth operation of balloted hunting.
These opportunities continue to exist because stakeholders with varying viewpoints work together.
The Blond Bay Hog Deer Advisory Group (BBHDAG) is a not-for-profit organisation run by representatives of Victoria’s hunting organisations.
The BBHDAG makes recommendations to the government on ballot periods and settings, conducts the ballot bookings and draws and arranges the final allocations and emergencies.
Being independent of government allows the BBHDAG to direct profits from the ballot directly into projects on the hunting reserves, which will directly benefit hunting opportunities and deer management — all with an eye to also delivering benefits to the environment and other stakeholders.
Keep an eye out as entries for the 2023 hog deer ballot will open soon.
