Grants program to help fill the gaps on promoting hunting
18 May 2022
Today the Victorian government launched the guidelines for the Sustainable Hunting Action Plan (SHAP) Grant Program 2021-2024.
The program seeks to enable collaboration between game hunters, government, Traditional Owners, and the community in the promotion of responsible, safe and sustainable game hunting practices.
The ADA welcomes this investment into hunting by the Victorian government to grow the economic, environmental and social benefits of responsible, sustainable and safe hunting.
The Game Management Authority (GMA) continues to ensure that hunting is well regulated and has undertaken a body of work to fill knowledge gaps with research projects into Stubble Quail and the development of the Interim Adaptive Harvest Model as it works towards its full implementation. However, due to the legislative framework that it operates within, the GMA cannot promote hunting in and of itself. As a result of the current void, the ADA has advocated to help shape these grants to help make up for these missing functions that the GMA should be empowered to do.
Consistent with our approach to the SHAP, the ADA is cognisant that results matter and will be paying close attention to ensure that non/anti-hunting groups or quasi environmental groups are not able to hijack grants that otherwise would go to projects that would deliver the intended program outcomes.
