Changes gazetted into law in Victoria this week will allow recreational hunters to take wild game meat in to Recreational Harvest Service Providers for processing for personal consumption.
The Australian Deer Association has advocated for these changes for some time, as we explained in late October when the bill to enable this passed Parliament.
A 'Recreational Harvest Service Provider' can, essentially, be any business which is not licensed by PrimeSafe - they can only process meat for the hunters personal consumption. Ultimately the onus is on the hunters to ensure that they present their game for processing in a suitable condition and that the service providers premises and hygiene is of a suitable standard. The Australian Deer Association will publish a directory of service providers as this market develops.
The Victorian Department of Jobs, Precincts and Regions has produced an excellent fact sheet to assist hunters in game meat safety for handling deer carcasses - some useful information in there whether you are using a service provider or processing the carcass yourself.
