Game Management confusion

None

After the new look Victorian cabinet was revealed yesterday, the General Order that defines the responsibilities between government Ministers was released.

The order is a 103-page document that provides specificity around Ministerial jurisdictions about Acts and, in some cases, sections of an Act.

Before the November election, the Australian Deer Association and FGA & SSAAV advocated for an improved process under section 87 of the Wildlife Act 1975 that would have seen the delegation of decisions made under this section by the Game Management Authority Victoria. This would have housed the process with appropriate subject matter experts and defined the oversight to a single point of accountability, in this case, the Minister for Agriculture.

However, with the raft of changes announced within the general order, a wide array of sections of the Wildlife Act 1975 now fall under the shared responsibilities of the Minister for Agriculture, the Minister for Environment and the Minister for Outdoor Recreation.

As more details, such as which and how many departments will be advising the three Ministers, become known, the association will inform its members.

Regardless of the final arrangements, the ADA will continue to advocate the principles of sound game management with the relevant departments and Ministers
