EAST GIPPSLAND & WESTERNPORT COLLINS FLAT BRANCH CAMP

HUNTING ABOUT

The Australian Deer Association’s East Gippsland and Westernport branches combined for a camp at Collins Flat Campground nestled alongside the mighty Dargo River in Eastern Victoria across the second weekend of September.

In what proved to another great example of branches combining their efforts for a branch camp, members from across the state made their way to the welcome settings where they enjoyed a great weekend surrounded by great company.

A highlight of the weekend was the traditional Saturday night cook up, where a few sambar deer that were harvested by a local ADA hound crew made their way onto the communal fire. Sambar racks and a chilli con carne went down a treat.

Many members enjoyed getting out for a hunt, with Scott Carter harvesting a nice stag with several other hunters also managing to catch a few trout to celebrate the opening of the trout season.

Well done to all involved.

OUTDOOR RECREATION ROUNDTABLE

The Australian Deer Association recently attended a roundtable of Outdoor Recreation industry leaders hosted by the Minister for Outdoor Recreation, Steve Dimopoulos, and the Parliamentary Secretary for Outdoor Recreation, Luba Grigorovitch.

This meeting is a realisation of ambitions held since the creation of the Outdoor Recreation portfolio in December 2022.

There were many positive outcomes from the meeting, but a standout was the shared enthusiasm towards the commercial processing of wild deer.

This would enable hunters to have their wild-harvested venison processed for them by a butcher, creating a new industry, generating more jobs, and increasing the utilisation of venison.

This is an exciting time in the recreational deer hunting space and, with your support, we will continue to advocate for sustainable policy outcomes.

LICENCE HOLDER’S ADDRESS REMOVED FROM VICTORIAN GAME LICENCE

Not all wins make the big headlines, but a small but meaningful advocacy outcome has been achieved in Victoria after several years of engagement to update the details provided on Game Licences.

Victorian Game Licences are not official forms of identification and, as such, there was no legitimate or administrative reason to publish the licence holders' home addresses on their licences.

It created a needless security risk by sharing such information, and the change to no longer publish this brings the game licence information into alignment with a firearms licence. Victorian Firearms Licences also do not publish a licence holder's address for the security concerns it creates.

Small wins, such as these, don’t change the world, but they are important to the end user, whose details and privacy are now more secure.

Josh Price managed to capture this trail camera photo of two sambar mating in December, demonstrating that sambar can rut at different times of the year.
