Budget increase for deer management in Victoria welcomed
24 November 2020
Today’s big spending Victorian State Budget has included some welcome spending on both deer management, both for today and for the future with a large commitment for the next Sustainable Hunting Action Plan.
When the Victorian Government released the Strategy just a month ago many commentators were underwhelmed with the stated $1 million investment. Today’s budget commits $18.3 million over the next four years – sending a serious statement about the Government’s commitment to getting a handle on wild deer management.
These budget commitments highlight the importance of game hunting and game management to Victoria.
Key initiatives in the budget include:
Deliver another Sustainable Hunting Action Plan
The Budget provides funding of $5.3 million over four years to develop – in partnership with hunting organisations and Traditional Owners – and deliver a second Sustainable Hunting Action Plan.
This will deliver on a key election commitment of the Government.
Deer Management
The Budget provides $18.2 million over four years to manage deer and implement actions within regional deer control plans.
This initiative includes funding to assist the Australian Deer Association’s volunteer program train and accredit recreational hunters to take part in deer control programs.
Recreational hunters in Pest Management
Funding will be provided to Parks Victoria to continue the successful partnership with SSAA Victoria to deliver the Conservation and Pest Management Program for another year.
Fox and Wild Dog Bounty
The Budget provides $8.3 million over four years for the Victorian Community Pest Management initiative, which will see the fox and wild dog bounty extended.
The bounty will continue to pay $10 payment for each fox killed and $120 payment for each wild dog killed to Victorian residents.
Collections generally occur at scheduled times from 1 March to 31 October. This year, collection dates have been extended to 26 November 2020 owing to COVID-19 restrictions’ impacts on the ability to open the depots.
