Raglan Measuring Course

On October 18 and 19, Australian Deer Association (ADA) Life Member and Chief Measurer, Ted Wohlers hosted another scoring seminar for ADA members to learn more about the intricacies involved in measuring wild deer antlers.

This measuring course took place in the regional Victorian town of Raglan and had keen students travel from as far as Queensland, New South Wales, and Victoria.

The young students were also fortunate enough to have ADA’s Trophy Registrar, Jamie Hinton swing past for a visit while several large trophies were certified.

The ADA frequently organises these educational seminars nationwide. Branches interested in hosting an Antler Measuring Course can learn from Ted Wohlers, our esteemed Life Member and Chief Measurer, who has decades of experience.

Bathurst Hosts Antler Measuring Course

On the last weekend of August, the ADA hosted another antler measuring seminar in Bathurst, New South Wales.

Throughout the weekend, participants mastered the Douglas Score system, a globally recognised method for evaluating deer antlers. This knowledge allows them to offer valuable scoring services to ADA members, enhancing the hunting experience.

It's heartening to witness both seasoned hunters and the younger generation united in their enthusiasm for learning about wild deer. The addition of new measurers in our Central West and Sydney branches ensures easier access to scoring services for local members.

Trophies that are eligible for the Top 50 in each species are measured first by an Accredited Scorer, then, after the 60-day drying period, the head is remeasured by a Certifying Panel of at least three scorers, one of whom has to be a Certifying Scorer. This process typically takes around one hour to complete; however, some large red deer may take a few hours to complete, as there are more antler tines to measure.

The ADA frequently organises these educational seminars nationwide. Branches interested in hosting an Antler Measuring Course can learn from Ted Wohlers, our esteemed Life Member and Chief Measurer, who has decades of experience.
