A new Agricultural minister for Victoria

None

As a result of four cabinet members announcing that they will not contest the upcoming Victorian state election in November, the government has announced changes to a new look ministry.

Of note is the change to the Agricultural Ministry, where the Hon Mary-Anne Thomas MP has served since December 2020.

Hunters will recall that it was Minister Thomas who, on the back of new data from the helicopter survey, increased the 2021 bag limit from two birds, to five, and removed the geographical restrictions placed on hunting the teal species.

The 2022 duck season saw the implementation of the Interim Adaptive Harvest Model which provides a scientifically sound model that was developed under the oversight of an independent scientific panel, that will produce sustainable harvests, which the association was pleased to contribute to. Minister Thomas is responsible for strategically moving duck hunting along the demonstrably sustainable path.

Minister Thomas oversaw the production of SHAP 2.0 and its subsequent grant program that seeks to promote responsible, safe, and sustainable game hunting practices.

Minister Thomas always engaged and provided frank and fearless feedback which is highly valued.

The Australian Deer Association wishes to thank Minister Thomas for her contributions to game hunting in Victoria and wishes her all the best in her new portfolio, Health.

The Australian Deer Association would also like to congratulate and welcome the Hon Gayle Tierney MP who has added Agriculture to her existing responsibilities for training and skills and higher education.

The Australian Deer Association looks forward to continuing to advocate for better outcomes for deer and public land access with Minister Tierney.
