Neil Page and Corrie DeVisser have owned Lake Reeve Ranch for quite a few years now. They manage the property to provide hog deer hunting opportunities for themselves as well as for paying clients from around Australia and overseas.
Along the way, their deer management has been highly successful, with their regime producing a number of top-quality trophies each year. Attention to feed, water and shelter and allowing stags to reach a mature age (in short – Quality Deer Management) underpin their success.
The stag featured here comes in at Number 16 in the ADA’s Top 50 for the species, scoring very well under the Douglas system, which particularly rewards symmetry in deer heads.
The dominance of trophies taken on Lake Reeve Ranch in the ADA’s Top 50 both endorses their management but also highlights problems elsewhere in the species’ coastal range – poor feeding conditions plus few stags being allowed to reach maturity due to high hunting pressure.
Neil and Corrie have approval for an extended hunting period on their property from the Victorian Game Management Authority, which allowed this stag to be taken outside the normal one-month April season.
