Join the Australian Deer Association Upper Goulburn Branch for a winter Sambar hunting camp in the Victorian High Country. Based at Bennies Camp Ground in the Alpine National Park, this camp provides members with the opportunity to hunt some of Victoria's premier Sambar country while enjoying a weekend with fellow hunters.
Whether you prefer backpack hunting into the surrounding ridges or day stalking through the gullies off Lake Cobbler Road, this camp offers an excellent opportunity to experience classic High Country hunting.

Camp Information
Target Species: Sambar Deer only (Alpine National Park regulations apply).
Hunting Style: Backpack hunting and day stalking.
Vehicle Access: Accessible by AWD vehicles to the main campground. Seasonal winter road closures apply beyond Bennies Camp Ground towards Lake Cobbler.
Nearest Supplies: Whitfield (approximately 45 minutes from camp). Members are encouraged to fuel up and purchase supplies before travelling to camp.
Catering: This is a fully self-catered camp. Please bring all food, cooking equipment and drinking water. Water is available from the nearby Rose River and should be filtered or boiled before use.
Communications: UHF Channel 14.
Safety: Blaze orange or high-visibility clothing is mandatory while hunting. Members are strongly encouraged to carry a Personal Locator Beacon (PLB).
Licensing and Regulations
All participants must:
Hold a current Victorian Game Licence with Deer Stalking authorisation.
Comply with all Victorian hunting regulations, including the legal minimum calibre requirements for Sambar Deer (.270 calibre minimum using a projectile of at least 130 grains).
Observe Alpine National Park regulations, noting that only Sambar Deer may be hunted within the park.
Ensure firearms are stored and secured in accordance with Victoria Police requirements while at camp.
Mobile Coverage
There is no mobile phone reception at Bennies Camp Ground.
Members should download offline mapping before leaving Whitfield. Suitable mapping applications include Avenza Maps and HuntStand.
Preferred registration deadline: Friday, 14 August 2026. Late registrations are welcome where possible.
