Game Management Authority.
Hunting on public land in Victoria is managed by the Game Management Authority. While hunting from Bennies we are generally hunting the Alpine National Park. All hunters must have a permit issued by GMA to stalk Sambar and be aware of the areas
they are in.
General info and home page for hunting
https://www.gma.vic.gov.au/hunting
https://licensing.gma.vic.gov.au/newlicence/
To apply for a license go to and tick Deer (stalking). It is just a matter of filling the form out and sending away. There are no booking systems in Victoria as NSW.
Firearm requirements
In NSW we just have recommendations for cartridge/caliber size. In Victoria it is law. Minimum cartridge / Caliber is .270 with 130gr projectile for Sambar. Note in the Alpine National Park you can only hunt Sambar nothing else. Don’t have any non compliant firearms such as a .22 in your vehicle. GMA compliance officers do drop into Bennies, make sure everything is locked away etc.
Gear
All members must be self-sufficient, camping, food, lighting, cooking bedding the lot. Remember it can be very cold and wet, so good warm gear. Gloves included. Also Tiger snakes are active in this area so gators are recommended, Gators also stop your pants being destroyed by the environment while stalking.
Safety equipment.
First aid.
Person Locating Beacon (PLB). Contact Peter at https://www.epirbhire.com.au/ tell him you’re an ADA member, he’ll do you a good price if your looking to buy one.
Always make sure you indicate to another member an area you plan to hunt. Be prepared to stay out overnight. Heading out of Bennies along the Lake Cobbler Road is a valley, after parking your car you’ll head up hill. Get lost just go down hill and you hit the road.
Travelling down
It’s a big trip, so take your time. You can break the trip up and stop at so an overnight sleep at Yass in the super centre or down to Gundagai, there’s a camp spot on the river. This will get you to Bennies late morning after a good sleep, gives you time to set up camp and go explore.
