Parks Victoria's aerial deer culling trial, which commenced on Tuesday, has been extended after poor weather hampered this weeks efforts. 

The cull will resume on Wednesday 15th May and, subject to weather conditions, continue until Friday 17th May (inclusive). The areas of the park subject to shooting will be closed on these dates.

The park is open this weekend. 

The cull is being conducted in the Mt Bogong, Bogong High Plains and Mt Feathertop areas of the Alpine National Park.

The Great Alpine Road, the Bogong High Plains Road, and Wallace’s Hut will remain open.

The Australian Deer Association (ADA) has consistently called for all costs to be fully and transparently reported. A lack of transparency last year led to some absurd 'back of the envelope' calculations being published in the media. Such disinformation does nothing to aid conversations about wildlife management. 

The ADA has also called for all pre and post operation monitoring to be released as soon as possible. The efficacy of Wildlife control should never be judged simply on numbers killed - there needs to be a clear understanding of what impact the control is attempting to address and robust monitoring in place so that success or failure can be assessed. 

A truly holistic appraisal and comparison of control measures must include all readily dispatchable options including hunting with hounds, commercial harvesting and targeting the efforts of ordinary recreational hunters.
