Tasmania’s Primary Industries Minister, Guy Barnett, has announced that the hunting season for antlerless deer will be extended to run from February to October.

The change follows recommendations from the Tasmanian Game Council, hunting groups and landholders.

"Landholders will be provided with five-year crop protection permits for antlerless deer and quotas and tags will no longer be required for antlerless deer, for both holders of crop protection permits and recreational hunters," Mr Barnett said.

"No changes are being made to the management of male antlered deer."

The changes will still involve hunters and landholders providing data in order to inform game management.

Mr Barnett said the new measures would be monitored by the government.

"Holders of crop protection permits and recreational hunting licenses will still provide annual take returns to assist with monitoring deer numbers," he said.

"This complement's Tasmania's first comprehensive state-wide deer census which is now underway using aerial surveying, camera traps and citizen science to inform future deer management strategies.

"We are committed to implementing our comprehensive response to the Legislative Council Inquiry into wild fallow deer."
