Parks Victoria have provided more information on their aerial culling ‘trial’ to take place in May.

The second stage of the aerial shooting trial will be conducted in the Mt Bogong, Bogong High Plains and Mt Feathertop areas of the Alpine National Park (see attached map). No shooting will occur within 300m of any private property or public roads adjacent to the Deer Control Area boundary.

The trial will take place over three to four weekdays between May 6 and 7. The exact dates will depend on the weather.

The areas of the park subject to shooting will be closed for the three to four days while the culling occurs.
The Great Alpine Road, the Bogong High Plains Road, Wallace Hut and Mountain Creek Camping Area will remain open.

The Australian Deer Association has been involved in a deer control trial for a number of years. In the original plan aerial culling was not contemplated, however, the targeting of recreational hunting to help to address impacts was.

We wrote last week on our concerns that a highly expensive, shoot to waste methodology is being pursued whilst more socially, economically and ethically appropriate measures such as targeting recreational hunting are not even being tried.
